Tulip Growing Tip #1 - Annual flowers, or other perennials, provide great cover for the tulips as they fade after bloom. Try to plant annuals while the tulip foliage is still visible in the spring. You can plant around the bulbs, avoiding damage.
Tulip Growing Tip #2 - Tulips do best in well drained soil, and will rot if planted in wet, soggy soil. If you want to plant them in a low lying area, try building a mound with good topsoil and then planting the tulip bulbs. This will provide a good bed for other flowers and shrubs too.
Tulip Growing Tip #3 - Tulips require full to partial sun to flourish.
Tulip Growing Tip #4 - After two or three years the bulbs will multiply and become overcrowded. Dig and divide them after the foliage has died away in midsummer. Store the bulbs in a mesh bag or crate. Replant in the fall.
Tulip Growing Tip #5 - When flowering is done, deadhead the flower stalks. But leave the foliage, as the bulb needs it to replenish its food supply. Camoflage the dying foliage with a planting of fresh annual flowers in between them.
Tulip Growing Tip #6 - Tulips are great cut flowers. Be sure to plant enough to supply a vase on your table.
